Spanish 2
Day of the Dead
The first project we have done in Spanish 2 is called Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) which is a Mexican holiday. Not to mourn for the ones we've loved and lost but to celebrate for the life they lived. Dia de los muertos has been around for over hundreds of years, it was originally derived from the Aztec culture and has been modified and morphed into the modern day Dia de los Muertos. Different versions of Dia de los Muertos are celebrated all over the world but the most common country to celebrate it is Mexico. Dia de los Muertos is celebrated over the period of three days, October 31, November 1, and, November 2. On October 31 is All Hallows Eve is the celebration of everyone that has died in the past, also known as Halloween. November 1 is All Saints' Day, this day celebrates the life all passed saints, which include past children. November 2 is All Souls' Day is the celebration of the life of all passed faithful souls. In all three celebrations there are homemade altars or Ofrendas, which is used to place items that represent a loved and passed person.
For this Project we essentially just celebrated the holiday for a grade. We were to choose a passed loved one and celebrate their life and remember them and the memories that are included. Not all of us could choose a family member or a friend because not all of us have had to experience loss, so some of us chose to celebrate pets. I chose to celebrate my recently passed grandmother, Pircilla Padilla. After we chose the person to celebrate we wrote two paragraphs in Spanish telling about that person and the most fond memories we have of them. Included with this piece of writing we were to create a piece of art representing the person we chose. Finally we were to bring an item that reminds us of that person or that represents that person.

Journalism project
In this project we chose a Spanish speaking country to research for events that took place recently. My country was Chile and my event was that Chilean law enforcement collected a couple dozen kilos of cocaine and a couple dozen arrests on the same event. Afterwards we wrote a news report skit in Spanish on our events for our country, my group (the other people that also did Chile) decided we would create a video with all of our news reports.
I connected to this project personally because I have a little Mexican in me and I find it interesting to see how people talk about other Spanish speaking country such as in the article I found for this event in Chile. The author of that article wrote that it was "Chilean law enforcement", instead of like Santiago Law enforcement, the article speaks of Chile as one City. Saying the "Chilean Law Enforcement" collected a couple kilos of cocaine is like saying that Washington law enforcement arrested bank robber, there is no specifics and I find it funny to see stuff like that. What I liked most about this project was the freedom we had in both our country and our event in that country. The most challenging moment I had was translating it all into an essay and I tried to do it with out our translation site called word reference so that part was the most difficult part for me in this project. What I learned about my self in this project is that I know a little more Spanish than I thought I did before this project.
